Access Control Levels

Access Control Levels (ACL) is one of the major new features in Joomla 1.6 and 1.7. Finally, Joomla developers can control which pages a certain user can edit or see at a very fine-grained level with core functionality.

ACL can be a little tough to understand right out of the box. However, with a few rules, you'll understand how ACL works and how to set it up to work in two key contexts, including controlling what different users see on the front end of the website, and what different users can create, edit, and delete on the back end of the website.
